Studio
Generating ideas

The studio is specialised in the design of sculptural landscapes and gardens in the UK and overseas.

My work draws its inspiration from the natural and architectural qualities of the site.  Through a process of interpretation and abstraction, new landscapes and landscape elements emerge to reflect the spirit of the place, yet offer new expression and purpose.

Every project is the object of  great care and attention.  My aim  is to create places of calm and beauty that ultimately correspond to the vision and needs of the commissioning client. Working closely with architects, artists and landscapers, I believe that an open and collaborative approach is the best way to achieve landscape design of the highest quality.

Design and nature

My approach explores the poetry that lies between the cultural and the natural aspects of the land. Both design and nature are central to my work.  Naturalistic surroundings make powerful settings for sculptural design and reciprocally, sensitive architectural interventions can enhance natural environments through contrasting aesthetic appeal and stimulating new narratives.

But natural landscapes are far more than bucolic backdrops for architecture and design; they are first and foremost precious habitats for plants and wildlife and often foster vital support systems essential to our own survival and well-being. At a time of environmental uncertainty, finding the right balance between design and nature has never been more important. In areas where nature is depleted or under threat, restoring nature is becoming a valuable part of any inspired and responsible landscape project.

Turning visions into reality

Initially a site visit is organised for us to meet and to study the nature of the landscape project and its location. During this visit we openly discuss the site, its story, its atmosphere, its ecology and not least its potentials.

Once a design brief and a working method for the project have been agreed, the site is studied in greater depth. Through a process of observation and familiarisation, places are carefully analysed before first concepts are developed.

On agreeing the best way forward, detail plans are drawn up to formalise designs and to prepare for the planning and implementation of the project. Where appropriate,  assistance is offered with the selection of landscapers or garden contractors to implement the designs and to monitor any subsequent works.
